Now in his sixties, Don Luis Javier is one of those persons that display remarkable energy and passion for life. When asked how long he has been in the coffee world his answer is "Since I was in my mother's womb". He started picking coffee at a very young age and got to know most of Colombia by doing it. His charming personality and strong desire to produce speciality coffee at his farm have made him a natural leader in his community.

La Primavera's People

Farm

La Primavera farm is located in Manzanares, Caldas. Don Luis Javier bought it twenty years ago. The farm's 3 acres are dedicated exclusively to coffee. With 8000 coffee plants, 3000 Caturra 5000 Castillo; it has been the main way of living for Don Javier and his wife. It takes about 45 minutes of walking along a steep trail to get to the farm from the main road. Don Luis Javier plans to have 5000 coffee plants in full production soon and he is using best practices in the plantation. To control "la Broca" (Coffee Bean Borer) he prefers to go the natural way by using the Beauveria bassiana fungus successfuly.

Alba Nidia has been living the last 23 years in the farm, along with her husband. She is very grateful to the coffee because it has provided a means to bring income to her family. Now they are diversifying, planting fruits and plantains.
Alba Nidia is proud of the companionship with her neighbords and the sense of security that the community brings.

The farms was inherited from her husband parents 50 years ago. Coffee has been the main means of living for her and her family. It is not an easy job but she and her husband do it with love and persistence.
Amanda believes that with hard work every dream is possible. She wants to improve the coffee production to be able to obtain better prices and improve life for her family.

Don Augusto's life has always been around coffee. The last 27 years in his own farm. Now that his three children are grown ups, he and his wife are alone in the farm taking care of the coffee. Don Augusto says that growing coffee is not an easy business but his love for the land is clear and he wants to improve his process to be able to sell it at a better price.
Don Augusto is a kind person and is always ready to help.

Blanca and her husband have had the farm for 10 years now. She is very involved in the coffee production process, ranging from picking the coffee to drying it. Blanca likes her life in the farm and is proud of belonging to this community.

Edilberto Blandon

El Mal Paso Farm (The Bad Step)

Edilberto was displaced by civil war in his birth place. He had to sell his previuos farm cheap and leave all behind. He moved to this region and bought the farm a year and a half ago. The farm had 2000 coffee plants and he planted 4000 more.
Edilberto has a very clear goal in his mind: he wants quality over quantity.

Fabian was brought up in the cattle breeding world, but after moving to this region 25 years ago he fell in love with coffee and a farmer decided to teach him and his cousin all about it. He made one of this dreams come true two years ago when he was able to buy his own coffee farm.
Fabian is a charismatic person and is very interested in producing specialty coffee because he understand that the quality greatly appreciated.

Don Jairo bought his farm 11 years ago. With his son they work the farm and so far the coffee has given them a way of living. Don Jairo wants to spend his retirement years in peace and, if possible, to buy a house in the nearby town for him and his wife.
He is convinced that having enough money to have a decent life is better that to have too much money.

Jessica moved to this farm two years ago with his husband. The owners of the farm are her parents in law. She is finishing highschool and wants to study to be a nurse.
Jessica helps with all the farm work, including coffee production.

Don Leonardo bought this farm with a friend 30 years ago. Twenty years ago he was able to buy his friend share and decided to change the farm name to "Aguas Claras" because one dream of Don Leonardo's was to restore the natural water stream.
Don Leonardo has a great sense of humor and is always making jokes.

For many years Doña Mariela and her husband worked in different farms until finally, twenty years ago, they bought this farm. Her two sons are working the land with them and have plans to improve the production. Doña Mariela just finished high school this year and she is very proud of it.
She is a persistent who wants to be able to have a quiet and comfortable life.

Don Uriel's parents bought the farm 33 years ago. He has lived all his life as a farmer and wants to keep it that way. Uriel is planning to plant citrus trees to improve the shade for the coffee plants.
Uriel is a quiet and hardworking person who likes to help his neighbors.

After finishing highschool Wilington went for 2 years to the military service. Just 4 months ago his father sold him the farm. He is planting plantains and next year he is going to plant avocados. Wilington wants to have income all the year around. He wants to buy a pickup truck to transport the farm's products.
Wilington is a entrepreneur and is always looking for opportunities to learn and improve.
